About

Western Australia has supported global space missions for more than 60 years, beginning with ground stations that tracked NASA Mercury, Gemini and Apollo flights from 1961 to 1975. The state now hosts facilities for five international space agencies, including two of ESA’s four deep-space stations at New Norcia, the Square Kilometre Array, optical communications networks, and US-Australia space surveillance assets. More than 140 organisations operate space or space-related services in the state.

The Department of Energy and Economic Diversification administers the Western Australia Space Industry Strategy 2024-30, which aims to position WA as an Indo-Pacific space hub. Recent actions include a $1.75 million Spaceport Establishment Support Grant awarded in August 2026 to Space Angel for site assessments and business-case work, plus $6.5 million in 2026 for the AROSE remote-operations consortium and Curtin University’s Binar CubeSat program. Earlier investment since 2018 exceeds $1 billion across the sector.

The Government of Western Australia is the state executive based in Perth. Its public sector comprises roughly 130 agencies. Space activity is coordinated principally through the Department of Energy and Economic Diversification (renamed from Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation on 1 July 2025).
