About
Ad Astra Rocket Company develops VASIMR (Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket), a radio-frequency plasma thruster that can trade thrust for efficiency in flight. Target uses include in-space cargo, station reboost and deep-space missions.
The company runs a 24,000 ft² facility in Webster, Texas, near NASA Johnson Space Center, with its own machine shop and a 150 m³ vacuum chamber for long-duration plasma firings under NASA contracts, including recent RF-coupler thermomechanical work.
Former NASA astronaut Franklin Chang Díaz, who conceived VASIMR in 1979, founded Ad Astra in 2005. A Costa Rica subsidiary works on distributed renewable energy and green hydrogen.
