Space Forge ForgeStar-1 Generates First Commercial Orbital Plasma — World-First Semiconductor Manufacturing Milestone
88 FOMOOn December 31, 2025, Space Forge confirmed its ForgeStar-1 satellite successfully generated plasma in low Earth orbit — the first commercial free-flying orbital plasma generation ever achieved outside the ISS. The miniature manufacturing furnace reached temperatures above 1,000°C in microwave-induced plasma, validating conditions for gas-phase crystal growth of wide-bandgap semiconductors (GaN, SiC, AlN, diamond). ForgeStar-1 launched June 2025 on SpaceX Transporter-14 and operates at ~540km LEO. The Pridwen heat shield onboard will also test controlled demise technology. The satellite is not designed to return materials to Earth — that capability is planned for ForgeStar-2.
Why it matters
Space Forge just proved that a $30M UK startup can build the first orbital semiconductor factory. The FOMO angle: microgravity-grown GaN and SiC crystals could be 60% more energy-efficient than terrestrial equivalents — materials for EV inverters, 5G/6G base stations, AI accelerators. This is an industrial revolution starting in orbit, and the supply chain advantage window is open now. Varda validated pharma manufacturing in space; Space Forge is doing it for chips.

Space Forge Just Lit the First Factory in Space, And It Makes SemiconductorsAnalysis frames Space Forge as operating at the intersection of space manufacturing and the semiconductor supply chain. The plasma test proves the manufacturing environment is achievable on an autonomous, free-flying commercial satellite. Long-term vision: orbital foundry manufacturing seed crystals returned to Earth for terrestrial scaling — a hybrid model that complements rather than replaces existing fabs. Materials advantages: no convection, near-zero nitrogen contamination, stable thermal conditions.

Space Forge generates plasma for LEO semiconductor material productionSpaceNews covers Space Forge's ForgeStar-1 plasma milestone. Focuses on the materials ambition: GaN, SiC, AlN, diamond — wide-bandgap semiconductors constrained by Earth's gravity-induced defect formation. Space Forge plans to combine orbital crystal growth with terrestrial scaling at Swansea University's Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials. ForgeStar-2 (with Pridwen return heatshield) will be the first to bring materials back.
