NASA Overhauls Artemis Architecture — III Moves to LEO Rendezvous, IV Gets the Landing
88 FOMOOn February 27, 2026, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman announced a major restructuring of the Artemis program. Artemis III is redefined from a lunar landing to a 2027 Earth-orbit rendezvous and docking test with Starship HLS and Blue Moon. The first crewed lunar landing is now Artemis IV, targeting early 2028. Artemis V is a potential second landing the same year. The goal: accelerate SLS launch cadence and reduce mission risk per flight.
Why it matters
This is the right call — Starship HLS was never going to be ready for a 2027 crewed Moon landing. Adding an Apollo 9-style test flight buys the program credibility. The 2028 landing target is now plausible.

NASA Overhauls Artemis: III Goes to Orbit, IV Gets the MoonNASA Administrator Jared Isaacman announced a fundamental restructuring of the Artemis program, turning Artemis III into a 2027 Earth-orbit rendezvous test with commercial lunar landers instead of the previously planned Moon landing. The first crewed lunar landing now falls to Artemis IV in early 2028, with Artemis V potentially adding a second landing that same year. NASA cited the need to accelerate SLS launch cadence and reduce per-mission risk.
