Brazil's Alcântara Space Center Hosts First-Ever Commercial Launch

The Alcântara Space Center (CEA) in Maranhão, Brazil hosted its first-ever commercial rocket launch on December 22, 2025 when Innospace's Hanbit-Nano lifted off. Although the mission failed ~30 seconds into flight, the event marked the operational debut of Brazil's equatorial spaceport for commercial partners — a strategic milestone that took decades and a bilateral agreement with South Korea to achieve. Brazil's Air Force and Space Agency actively supported the launch campaign. Alcântara's near-equatorial position (2.3°S) gives it a 10-15% payload advantage for equatorial LEO and GTO missions over higher-latitude pads.

Why it matters

The pad is lit, the infrastructure works, the international agreement framework is in place. Alcântara's failure was Innospace's failure, not Brazil's. The equatorial advantage will attract the next wave of smallsat operators looking for cost-competitive orbit insertion.
